Tomorrow night we play the Flames at the JLA. I'll be there. No big deal. I'm not bragging. Just saying, you should be jealous. Moving on.
-There are a number of different scenarios that could play out tomorrow night and I'd like to discuss their various effects on the standings. First, from NOHS, we can see just how tight the race is for the final two spots in the West.
-Scenario 1 (The Good) : We beat the Flames in regulation and Bubba loses to Atlanta in regulation.
7th Place: Red Wings: 66 GP, 32 W, 76 P
8th Place: Predators: 66 GP, 35 W, 75 P
9th Place: Flames: 66 GP, 32 W, 73 P
This is obviously the best case scenario, as we'd open up a 3 point lead on the Flames and the playoff cutline. We'd also move up a spot in the standings.
-Scenario 2: We beat the Flames in regulation and Nashville loses to Atlanta in OT.
7th Place: Predators: 66 GP, 35 W, 76 P
8th Place: Red Wings: 66 GP, 32 W, 76 P
9th Place: Flames: 66 GP, 32 W, 73 P
This is the second best scenario as we are still opening up a three point lead on Calgary/the cut line but Nashville would have the tie breaker (wins) on us. We're gonna have to beat Nashville outright in points because odds are they'll have us in tie breakers at the end of the year unless they fall hard and we keep up our pace (4 wins in the last 5 games)
Scenario 3: We lose in OT, Nasvhille loses in OT
7th Place: Predators: 66 GP, 35 W, 76 P
8th Place: Flames: 66 GP, 33 W, 75 P
9th Place: Red Wings: 66 GP, 31 W, 75 P
Similar to Scenario 3 in that we're tied pointswise for a spot, but lose out on tiebreakers. Clearly every point we get from here on out is going to be valuable, especially in games against Bubba and Calgary, and to a lesser extent, St. Louis, Dallas, Anaheim and Minnesota.
Scenario 4 (The Bad): We lose in OT, Nashville wins (reg or OT)
7th Place: Predators: 66 GP, 36 W, 77 P
8th Place: Flames: 66 GP, 33 W, 75 P
9th Place: Red Wings: 66 GP, 31 W, 75 P
Scenario 5 (The Ugly): We lose in regulation, Nashville wins
7th Place: Predators: 66 GP, 36 W, 77 P
8th Place: Flames: 66 GP, 33 W, 75 P
9th Place: Red Wings: 66 GP, 31 W, 74 P
Knocks us back out of the playoff picture, Pierre changes his stance, declares our season dead and everyone's time wasted, then proceeds to give us Sidney Crosby's opinion of the Western playoff race.
Clearly, this is one of several must win games in our remaining 17 games, but coupled with the Predators game it may be one of the most important. Hopefully the Wings team we've seen against Ottawa, Colorado, Nashville and the second period agasint Chicago.

If only you were this good at math back in school, you wouldn't be such a failure.
ReplyDeleteDood, this math is easy. a WIN gets your POINTS. MOAR POINTS=good
ReplyDeleteI think you nailed it. We need to beat the Flames outright no matter what tomorrow night, no question. While I think the division is probably out of the question at this point, we're not behind LA and Phoenix by very much and 5th seed would be much more satisfactory than being seeded 8th. The next two weeks of hockey are going to be intense and desperate.
ReplyDeletei think we need to settle down and focus on getting as many points as we can from here on it. while it's good to see how others are doing in the standings; but we need to focus on our own game and getting those valuable points..
ReplyDeleteThe playoffs are a completely different animal.. we can take on a lot of teams ontop of the west ; SJ, blackhawks, coyotes etc.
Duly noted. Although it is interesting to see how one night of play can affect the landscape of the league
